Character Information
Name: Dr Jonathan Crane
Fandom: Batman
PB: (you have to use the actor for tv series/movies. If it's a character from a book then you get to decide who portrays your character): Cillian Murphy
journal: drjonathancrane
powers: None, though under great emotional stress he has become one of two ferocious beasts - Scarebeast and Schrocken. Both beasts seem to be under control, but Scarebeast is pretty unpredictable…

Relationships: The only relationships Crane has are negative; especially the odd relationship between himself and the Batman. Like other villains before him, he is obsessed with getting rid of the Batman. Occasionally he may be persuaded to work with The Mad Hatter, The Penguin or The Joker, but unless there is something in it for him, he is not well-suited to groups.
Friendships: None
Sexuality: Straight

Strengths: Dr Crane possesses great intellect and specialises in both psychiatry and chemistry.
Weaknesses: Not physically very strong. Not very intimidating.
Habits/Quirks: An apparent fetish for straw and burlap, his outfit as The Scarecrow consists of rags, rope and straw, including a straw hat and a hangman’s noose. He repeatedly uses an array of toxins and drugs that induce fear in his victims. These toxins coupled with his freakish outfits ensure that he rarely has to use physical means to kill someone; rather he frightens them literally to death.
Crane is terrified of birds, probably due to his grandmother locking him in an aviary when he ‘misbehaved’. However, he seems to be able to control his fear, in an attempt to never be consumed by his fears.
While in Arkham Asylum, he entertains himself by diagnosing fellow inmates in a show of intelligence.
Technically a quirk he cannot help, he has an elongated appearance; his limbs are very long and lanky and he appears thin and spindly, much like a scarecrow.
Seems to have a penchant for nursery rhymes. Often recited as a taunt or in moments of severe madness.
Personality: Crane is a very quiet and bitter man, preferring science and technology to violence and fighting. His intellect is his greatest weapon, his creativity unlimited. He thrives off other people’s fear, amusing himself by terrorising innocent people and revelling in the power he has over their darkest emotions. He is incredibly sadistic, as proven by his insane experiments on everyone and anyone.
He does not trust anyone, probably because he was bullied and misled in his youth, and as such prefers to work alone. However, he is corruptible, and may be persuaded to work with others, especially if he gains something from it.
Crane is very egotistical; he believes himself to be extremely intelligent and misunderstood. He believes that the psychology of fear is a very important subject and obsesses over it, and in fact experimented on his students to prove this point.
What was your character doing before they arrived on the island? (A bit of back history. Please include from which season a TV series character comes.)
Jonathan Crane was a very timid, bookish child, and he grew faster and taller than the other children. As a result, he was bullied harshly, taunted by names such as “Scarecrow” and “Ichabod”, and even once set on fire by another boy.
As he grew older, he developed a love for books, and after reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, he elected to make the main character, Ichabod Crane, his personal hero because of his way with women, his popularity and his dancing skills. However, Ichabod was fearful like himself, and he vowed never to be as consumed by his own fear ever again. Inspired by the tale, he developed his own style of “violent dancing”, a fighting technique which borrows heavily from the Crane style of Kung-Fu, but is elegant and sweeping which makes excellent use of his long limbs. If he is forced to fight, it is violent dancing which he uses to defend himself.
In high school he fell in love with a girl named Sherry Squires, who was unfortunately romantically involved with a boy named Bo Griggs, who was reminiscent of the bullies who tormented young Crane when he was a child. Despite this, Crane worked up the courage to ask Squires to a costume party. She accepted, but unbeknownst to Crane she was conspiring with Griggs to humiliate him. At the party, Squires led Jonathan into a dark room. Griggs jumped out at him wearing a jack-o-lantern and chased him around before throwing a pumpkin at his head, much like the chase in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Furious, Crane murdered Squires and paralysed Griggs a year later by spooking them as they drove out of the school parking lot dressed in his Scarecrow guise, causing them to crash.
Crane then attended Gotham University, where he was the favoured student of his psychology professor. One thing bothered Crane about his teacher - he was dismissive of the psychology of fear. After graduation, as there was no spot available in the Psychology department, he turned his attentions to chemistry, during which time he discovered and perfected his fear toxin. In an attempt to prove to his former teacher that fear was indeed a powerful emotion, he killed the man, and later took his place as head of the Psychology department. He taught students the importance of fear using unorthodox methods, and experimented on them. His career in the university ended when he injured a girl during an example of the body’s reaction to fear (he shot at a flowerpot and a shard hit the girl in the face). Enraged at the decision to fire him, he went back to the establishment dressed as the Scarecrow and murdered each of them. Crane then went on to become a psychoanalyst at Arkham Asylum.
However, the deaths of his employers did not go unnoticed, and Batman eventually tracked him down and sent him off to Arkham as a patient. He has escaped and been readmitted several times since.
Crane comes to this RP long after the appearances of Scarebeast and Schrocken, two ferocious beasts that Crane has no control over. Though it is believed that both are no longer, Scarebeast seems to be a bit more unpredictable than Schrocken. In any case, this Crane belongs to the comics continuity and arrives before he would have chosen to dump his toxins in favour of mental manipulation.
Writing Example: (Must be a writing example for your character. Third person please. You may provide a link. It does not have to be a new writing example but it should be at least 300 words) from the DC Legends app. I just like this one ^_^

The young man cowered in front of him, screaming incoherently, arms up to shield his face. No use against a bullet, but then it wasn’t bullets the boy was afraid of. Not right now. Grinning with self-satisfaction, the former doctor stepped menacingly toward the youth, glaring intently into his face, drinking in the pain, the suffering, the desperate fear simply oozing from him as he continued to shrink back, rambling on about some kind of phobia that meant nothing now. His own tall, straw like figure was silhouetted by the moon, and he cast a shadow along the ground and over the sobbing, now broken “person” in front of him. Like this, Jonathan Crane was powerful, in control. When that young man looked up at him he wasn’t just causing fear, he was fear itself.

“What is it that you’re so afraid of?” he mused in a taunting manner, drawing ever closer. “Surely not a man in a costume. Or have you always had an irrational phobia of scarecrows?”

He wasn’t expecting any other response than the garbled mess of syllables he was hearing. Occasionally he caught a ‘please’ and something that sounded like ‘snakes’, which simply made the experience that little bit more enjoyable. Stopping short of stepping on the miserable thing, he swooped down to get a better look at the expressions on his face. Tutting mockingly, he pointed his handgun into the younger man’s face, allowing his breath to come out through his teeth in a sort of hiss, delighting in the fact that it made the youth squirm and squeak like a frightened schoolchild.

“At any rate, thank you,” he murmured, electing to put the weapon back where it had been. He pulled out a small canister and sprayed it into the coward’s face. That pathetic shaking and whimpering began to slow, the body becoming heavier as it became paralysed. The Scarecrow smirked beneath his mask. “It’s nice to know that my costume is, er, believeable.”

With that, he stood up straight and walked casually away from the scene, leaving his “friend” with his nightmares. The poor thing looked like he needed a little alone time… he’d seemed positively scared to death.
